Television Series to Marathon Over Thanksgiving Weekend

Thanksgiving is today and for many of us, that means a glorious four day weekend. It’s the only time of the year when I don’t feel guilty about wallowing in a big ol’ puddle of lazy. I take the extra days to clean and organize, to go through my stacks of unread books and comics, and to do some serious binging on television in between binging on Thanksgiving dinner leftovers. Streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Instant Video have a plethora of television options available, and you can knock out entire series in a day or over the course of four days.

I have suggestions on what you can marathon based on how much time you have available to spend on the couch over the weekend. I’ve included complete series as well as a few shows that are currently airing because there’s no time like the present to get caught up.

If you’ve never seen Firefly, settle in and enjoy all 14 episodes of the Joss Whedon series in one day. It’s a western set in space with an entertaining crew and plenty of laughs and memorable quotes.

The IT Crowd, complete series, 9.2 hours

Meet Roy, Moss, and Jen in this British comedy starring a group of quirky IT workers at a large corporation that has new ownership. It takes a few episodes to find its footing, but once it does, prepare to laugh.

11-20 Hours
The Blacklist, Season 1, 15.4 hours
Available on Netflix and Amazon Instant Video
Starring James Spader as Ray Reddington and Megan Boone as Elizabeth Keen, The Blacklist is a riveting crime drama. Reddington is a most-wanted fugitive who turns himself in and assists the FBI in tracking down the worst of the worst. Spader’s performance makes every second worth watching. Season 2 is currently airing on NBC.

Alphas, complete series, 16.8 hours
Available on Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video
A Syfy series that got canceled too soon, Alphas centers on a group of individuals with amazing gifts. They’re sort of like X-Men. They work together to solve crimes committed by others with mutant-like powers, and the character relationships are engrossing.

Orphan Black, Seasons 1 – 2, 15 hours
Available on Amazon Prime Instant Video
Orphan Black is easily one of the most mesmerizing series currently on television. Tatiana Maslany stars in multiple roles in the series about a group of mysterious clones who try to unravel the mystery of why they exist and what their purpose is. Season 3 will air on BBC America soon.

Defiance, Seasons 1 and 2, 18.2 hours – available on Amazon Prime Instant Video

21-32 Hours
Daria, complete series, 23.5 hours
Available on Amazon Prime Instant Video
Travel back to the last century and watch the adventures of Daria in this animated series from MTV. Daria is intelligent and serves up some all too accurate observations about high school, life in suburbia, and pop culture. I haven’t watched it in years so I’m not positive how it holds up, but I bet it’s still relevant.

Arrow, Seasons 1 – 2, 32 hours
Available on Netflix and Amazon Instant Video
One of the best superhero series on television, Arrow centers on Oliver Queen. Learn about his origin story and watch him save Starling City in this Batman-esque take on Green Arrow. Season 1 is good, and Season 2 is amazing. Season 3 of Arrow is currently airing on The CW.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold, complete series, 24.9 hours – available on Netflix and Amazon Instant Video
