Finally! The Both, the new duo that consists of singer-songwriters Ted Leo and Aimee Man, is releasing their first album, the appropriately eponymous The Both. After touring as solo artists in 2012, Leo and Mann were inspired to start writing music together. Theyâve been touring as The Both for the past year, testing out their songs and sharing an addictive back-and-forth banter on stage.
You know Ted Leo as the front man for Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, but heâs also an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and solo act. Aimee Mannâs been making beautiful jams since the early â90s and is most well known for ‘Til Tuesday and her work on the soundtrack to Paul Thomas Andersonâs Magnolia, as well as her guest spots on IFCâs Portlandia.
Rolling Stone has an advance look at The Bothâs first single, “Milwaukee.” Leo told Rolling Stone, “I think the song is a pretty good representation of how our writing meshes on this project â solid melodies and tight harmonies, forward movement but not going off the rails, some busier rocking parts meeting some spookier atmospherics, etc. And it speaks specifically of our friendship and some of the things that honestly did lead us to want to begin writing together.”
Don’t just take our word for it; take a listen to “Milwaukee” here and put your review in the comments below. For more about the band and where theyâre touring, check out The Bothâs official website.
This is a good song. It’s a bit dry compared with Mann’s music in general, but the song’s got punch. It does sound a bit generic, though. Nonetheless, it’s a solid, energetic debut by The Both.
Good enough to elicit a few extra words.
