TED 2 Finds Its Leading Lady

When it comes to surprise hits of recent memory, few can top the shock we all received from Seth MacFarlane’s debut feature, Ted. The film – centering on the relationship between John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) and his alive-by-magic teddy bear, Ted, both of whom are now in adulthood – is almost unfairly hilarious while maintaining the high level of crass humor one would expect from the mind of MacFarlane. Now with post-production almost locked on his sophomore effort, A Million Ways To Die In The West, the Family Guy creator is quickly gearing up for the sequel to his debut big screen hit, which, as of today, has found its leading lady.

Deadline is reporting that Amanda Seyfried has been cast in the upcoming sequel as the female lead. While the report does state Mila Kunis, who played Mark Wahlberg’s girlfriend Lori in the original Ted, is still involved in a small role (though that may change to none at all), she will not be a main cast member this time around – a decision made solely for creative reasons, according to MacFarlane.

In the first film, Lori was at constant odds with Ted for the attention of John (Wahlberg), leading to a point where John had to choose between the love of his life and his magical teddy bear that grew up. This plot is what provided the film with the majority of its charm, asking the question: What happens when we’re forced to let go of our childhood in order to begin the rest of our lives? Because of that, it would seem Kunis would be the obvious choice as female lead in the sequel now that she’s on good terms with Ted… but you’d be wrong to think that.

Considering the first film ends with John and Lori getting married, it might very well be that this isn’t a “break up” scenario. Ted’s relationship with Tami-Lynn was always more of a gag than anything else, so it might be a good bet that Seyfried’s character is going to be Ted’s love interest this time around. So perhaps this is the move that forces Ted to rid himself of his mischievous ways in order to obtain the love which has always come hard to him.

But there are some other possibilities:

– Seyfried is a villain type character, trying to convince John she’s better for him than Lori.

– Seyfried is some kind of relative of John’s who’s visiting for a length of time, and she’ll get into misadventures with the two best buds.

– Seyfried is the one magically responsible for Ted’s gift of life (okay, that one’s just because it sounds cool).

No matter what the case may be, it seems Ted 2 is shaping up nicely. The movie has a tentative June 26, 2015 release date.
