Between Star Wars, X-Files, and now even Pee-Wee Herman and Twin Peaks returning, the last few years of pop culture have proven that if you just wait long enough, that thing you love will eventually come back. The latest cult property to come back after a long hiatus is none other than the classic BBC sitcom, Absolutely Fabulous, or as its devoted fanbase refers to it, AbFab. The teaser trailer for the long awaited AbFab movie just dropped, and you can watch it above.
For those of you unfamiliar, Absolutely Fabulous was a television series created by writer/actress Jennifer Saunders about two middle-aged British hipsters — Edina Monsoon, played by Saunders, and Patsy Stone, played by Joanna Lumley. Edina and Patsy drank heavily, did drugs, slept around, and constantly tried to keep up with the latest trends in an effort to appear young and hip. The show was a huge hit on the BBC, as well as in the states, where it aired on Comedy Central for years.
The original show ran for three seasons from 1992-1996, occasionally coming back for a new season here and there. A fourth season premiered in 2001, and fifth in 2002-2003. There have been a handful of specials since then, but for years, Jennifer Saunders has teased the possibility of an AbFab movie. Then it became a reality last year, much to the rejoice of longtime fans.
Not much is known about the new movie, except that it takes place in the south of France, and will be filled with celebrity cameos from the likes of Rebel Wilson and Kim Kardashian. Almost all of the original cast will be back as well. It’s also fair to guess that the words “sweetie darling” will be uttered several times during the movie. Fox Searchlight is releasing the movie, directed by Mandie Fletcher.
Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie is scheduled to hit theaters in the UK in July. There isn’t a North American release date yet, but expect news on that to come shortly.
