Teaser for HOUSE OF CARDS Season 4 Recalls Past, Foreshadows Future

The following post contains spoilers for seasons 1-3 of House of Cards. Since we’re talking about a teaser for the fourth season, it would make sense, wouldn’t it? Please read ahead at your own risk, don’t say we didn’t warn you. Because we did. We totally warned you. This is it. A warning.

A lonely bouquet of flowers lying on DC’s subway tracks. A frighteningly confident Frank Underwood campaign poster overlooking the railway. “Putting America Back on Track” is the campaign slogan, and the teaser for the upcoming fourth season of Netflix‘s critical darling House of Cards seems to be saying an awful lot with so little. [Spoilers and speculation ahead.] Viewers of the show will know well the journalist who those flowers memorialize, and will know the ramifications for Frank Underwood’s political aspirations if the truth of her death somehow makes its way into public conversation. When season three wrapped up, politically, Frank (Kevin Spacey) was last seen fighting an intense primary insurgence from former U.S. Solicitor General Heather Dunbar, and personally, witnessing his wife leave him. We’ve seen him battle seemingly overwhelming odds before, but in politics, buddy, there’s no such thing as a sure bet.

Whether or not Zoe Barnes’ death will finally rear its head back into Frank Underwood’s life has been a question viewers have been asking since season two. The issue seems to have been laid to rest (apologies for the pun) but the teaser makes us think that Underwood’s vision of putting America “Back on Track” might very well be, ahem, derailed. As it stands, the only person left truly in Frank’s corner is his right-hand-man Doug Stamper. But politically, Frank is nothing — and would be nothing — without his wife Claire. If he manages to mend that relationship, he might have a shot at retaining the Oval Office. If not, things could go very bad indeed for ol’ F.U.

If the American House of Cards ends up following the overall arc of the British series (and novels) from which it is inspired, we may well see Claire play a very big part in the final episodes. There’s no word yet on whether showrunner and writer Beau Willimon has a fifth season planned, and if he doesn’t… well, give The Final Cut a watch on Netflix. It’s the third in the original House of Cards adaptation trilogy, and maybe, just maybe it can give us clues to where Frank Underwood is headed. Mark your calendars, because House of Cards season four will be streaming on Netflix in its entirety on Friday, March 4th.
