TBS Extends Conan O’Brien’s Contract Through 2018

The worlds of late night are going through an entire realignment, which sort of feels as momentous as actual planets realigning. With David Letterman and Craig Ferguson leaving, Stephen Colbert set to take over The Late Show, and Larry Wilmore to replace The Colbert Report, all the other networks that have late night programming are also preparing for a new late night era.

Following Jimmy Kimmel’s contract extension by ABC, TBS has just extended Conan O’Brien’s contract through 2018.

That’s one year longer than ABC has given Kimmel, and a show of good faith in O’Brien by TBS. As it stands now, in 2015, at 11:35PM, Conan O’Brien, Stephen Colbert, Larry Wilmore, Jimmy Kimmel, Arsenio Hall, and Jimmy Fallon will all be on the air facing off against each other. This will be the first time in a long time that none of the hosts of a late night talk show will have any sort of public grudge against each other. Maybe Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon will make up a fake feud inspired by Colbert’s ceremonious Tonight Show welcome for Fallon earlier this year.

There’s no word yet as to the fate of The Pete Holmes Show, which is produced by Conan’s Conanco. The Pete Holmes Show has just wrapped production for their latest cycle and are waiting to hear whether they will continue to follow Conan at 12AM for the foreseeable future. This three year extension does make it hard to imagine TBS axing Holmes and his show, especially given how well both shows compliment each other.

For now, I’m glad that we’ll get to see Conan O’Brien wreak more hilarious havoc.
