Tarantino’s HATEFUL EIGHT Roadshow Version Gets 6 Minutes of Extra Runtime

Todays average Hollywood films clock in at around 130 minutes, and most of the longer films are almost always sequels of some sort. Quentin Tarantino, on the other hand, has continuously pushed for longer original films in Hollywood, and The Hateful Eight will follow suit.

There will be two versions of Hateful Eight in theaters; a limited 70 mm roadshow version out in 100 theaters this December 25 and an extended release digital multiplex version out January 8. Complete with classic overture and intermission inserts, Hateful Eight the roadshow version has just been extended with an extra 6 minutes, hitting a total of 3 hours and 2 minutes, while the multiplex version, also with overture and intermission, is about 6 minutes shorter.

Both versions are tweaked and adjusted in certain scenes to fit their respective experiences, meaning the multiplex version wasn’t created as a lesser version. In the Variety announcement, Tarantino said that with the roadshow version, “It was awesome in the bigness of 70, but sitting on your couch, maybe it’s not so awesome. So I cut it up a little bit. It’s a little less precious about itself.”

The reasoning behind this roadshow version extension: grab the audience with an exclusive, and early, theater experience. Tarantino also mentioned, “I’m hoping that ‘Hateful Eight’ does well enough that that becomes, for the filmmakers who care, the new premier way to launch their movie in an exclusive way.”

2 weeks early and 6 extra minutes of this glorious sounding 70 mm spaghetti western flick? Count us in for the roadshow version!
