Tarantino Wants To Show You A Four Hour DJANGO UNCHAINED

Quentin Tarantino, the indie filmmaker that’s never at a loss for sound bites, has dropped a brand new nugget for the world to enjoy. The director made a splash in 2011 with his Jamie Foxx-starring Western – sorry, Southern – Django Unchained, despite the film’s hefty 165 minute run time. As is typical with Tarantino fare, it was revealed at the time that many scenes were ultimately cut to bring the film down to a reasonable length. But now, in an age of limited-series events, Tarantino has spoken at the Cannes Film Festival about possibly bringing that once-unseen footage to the small screen.

“I have about 90 minutes worth of material with Django,” said Tarantino. “It hasn’t been seen. My idea, frankly, is to cut together a four-hour version of Django Unchained.” Adding, “but I wouldn’t show it like a four hour movie. I would cut it up into hour chapters. Like a four-part mini-series. And show it on cable television. Show it like an hour at a time, each chapter… People roll their eyes at a four-hour movie. But a four-hour mini-series that they like, then they are dying to watch all four parts. That’s how I thought it could work.”

In an age where Hollywood is always trying to find new ways to make money from library content, this is definitely one of the more creative ideas we’ve heard. More likely than basic cable, however, for an idea like this, would be Netflix or Amazon; either service would kill to have rights to a Tarantino exclusive. While the thought of HBO is nice, something of this type isn’t really HBO’s speed, but any of the new media streaming services would make headlines if they moved forward on an exclusive like this.

Would you guys watch a four-hour Django Unchained mini-series? Which other Tarantino movies would you like to see in miniseries form? Let us know in the comments below.

On what network is he planning this? Surely not a major network like NBC, ABC or CBS. HBO, Showtime, or Cinemax is more like it…
