The big screen has gone through many different kinds of horrific creatures in its day. Movies have given us the likes of ghosts, mummies, werewolves, killer robots, vicious aliens, and crudely-woven-together-corpse-part amalgams reanimated by the whims of foul science. Today’s Nerdist News Talks Back is devoted entirely to the stalwart history of cinematic creatures, as they’re all–yes, all–coming back to the silver screen in a big way. As you may have heard last week, Sony has roped Tom Hardy to star in a Venom movie. The latest news on this project is that it may not involve Spider-Man, Venom’s chief adversary, whatsoever. But do we want to see a Spidey-less Venom film? And does this mean that Venom has no chance of facing off with any of the Marvel Cinematic Universe characters owned by Disney?
Speaking of Spidey, Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland has found his next blockbuster venture: a film adaptation of the video game Uncharted, in which he’ll star as a young Nathan Drake. Even though the prequel gambit is all the rage today, audiences were surely not expecting Uncharted to go that route. So how do we feel about Baby Drake?
Moving back to the conversation of monsters, Universal has officially launched its Dark Universe film franchise, which will reboot–along with Tom Cruise’s imminent The Mummy film, which will also feature Sofia Boutella as the titular bundle-o’-bandages and Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll–characters like Frankenstein’s Monster and the Invisible Man. Javier Bardem will take on the role of the bolt-necked corpse, while Johnny Depp will play the unseen bandit; both will make their first appearance in Bride of Frankenstein, which will be directed by Beauty and the Beast helmer Bill Condon.
And if that weren’t enough, one more soulless monstrosity (and occasional nice guy) will be finding his way back to the big screen: the Terminator. Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed that he’ll be reprising his role in a new entry in James Cameron’s series, one that will no doubt be happy to help us forget about Terminator: Genysis. But is there change yet to salvage the good name of Uncle Bob?
