Taika Waititi totally rejuvenated the Thor franchise with Ragnarok, but will he find success with a live-action Akira movie? We discussed that on today’s Nerdist News Talks Back, along with Daniel Craig returning to plays James Bond again, as well as talking to one of the star’s of HBO’s new black comedy series Barry.
Joining today’s guest host Dan Casey was Bizarre States‘ Andrew Bowser and producer Jesse Gill, and they welcomed Anthony Carrigan (Gotham, Parenthood), one of the stars of HBO’s series Barry starring Bill Hader. But they started with Variety‘s report that Daniel Craig’s next film will, in fact, be James Bond 25. Are we excited for him to return as 007? Do we like his take on the character? How has the long-running film franchise influenced other cinematic universes like Marvel? Have heroes like Jason Bourne and John Wick, and action movies like Mission: Impossible made James Bond less relevant? Would it help if James Bond was more progressive? And do we think Danny Boyle is the right director for the film?
Speaking of director’s we love, Taika Waititi gave an update on his plans for a live-action Akira movie, saying he doesn’t want to touch the original film and instead wants his adaption to be based on the original six, massive books. With that much source material though, is there anyway a single movie will be satisfying? Is Waititi, most known for his comedy, the right director for the heavy Akira? And after he reinvented the Thor franchise with Ragnarok, is there another character or film we’d like to see him take over?
Finally it was time to hear from Anthony Carrigan about how he came to play Noho Hank on HBO’s new series Barry, about a hitman who gets involved in the Hollywood scene. What about the show appealed to him? How much does he get to improvise on set? How does he manage to be funny while still seeming threatening? How hard is it to pull off that accent? And what can we expect from his character the rest of this season?
