Taika Waititi Just Dropped Some New THOR: RAGNAROK Hints

Thor: Ragnarok is heading into the home stretch of production with just a few weeks of filming left, but that hasn’t stopped director Taika Waititi from releasing a few tantalizing hints about his plans for the movie.

During an AMA session on Reddit, Waititi answered several questions about Thor‘s third feature film and indicated that the title character will be getting a renewed focus. “This is something we concentrated a lot on,” said Waititi. “Thor is awesome now.” He added that all of Chris Hemsworth‘s comedic chops would be utilized in the film, and that Mark Ruffalo‘s Bruce Banner would steal the show.

Regarding the decidedly retro logo for the film that Marvel released at San Diego Comic-Con, Waititi said that there will be an ’80s vibe “and more” to the film, before adding that “the style is inspired by ’70s / ’80s sci-fi fantasy art. Because our film feels like that.” Waititi went on to say that he thinks it “will be one of the most adventurous and most ‘out there’ of all the Marvel movies. It’s a crazy movie.”

Surprisingly, Waititi indicated that the one Marvel character he couldn’t get in the film was John C. Reilly‘s Rhomann Dey from Guardians of the Galaxy, which proved too difficult to pull off because neither the Nova Corps nor Xandar will factor into this story. Waititi also teased an “an amazing shot that took a bunch of mathematicians and scientists (nerds) a couple of months to figure out. We’re also using a rig called Satelight that has never been used in a movie before.”

While Waititi acknowledged that Marvel Studios shaped the film’s storyline, he added that “I’ve had a big influence on story and character and tone. It’s just like how I make my other films except way bigger. So far I’ve been given a lot of creative freedom.” Additionally, he noted that it “would be a dream come true” to make more comedic Marvel shorts in the vein of his Thor and Darryl sketch from Comic-Con.

Finally, Waititi sidestepped the rumors of a Doctor Strange post-credits sequence, but he did say that there will “probably a reference” to Strange in the film.

Thor: Ragnarok will arrive in theaters on November 3, 2017.
