The simplicity of tag is what makes it such a popular schoolyard game. You chase someone down and make someone else “it,” then run like hell trying to avoid the same fate. It’s great specifically because there’s not much to it, but that’s exactly why it was unlikely to be the basis for an entire big budget Hollywood movie, especially one starring an all-star cast. But the first trailer for Tag, based on a real story, shows that when a group of friends has been playing one epic game for 30 yearsâregardless of work, weddings,, childbirth, and deathâthere’s nothing simple about it.
Based on the article âIt Takes Planning, Caution to Avoid Being Itâ by Russell Adams that ran in The Wall Street Journal, Tag follows “five highly competitive friends” who for one month every year are willing to risk anything and everything to make someone else “it.” Jeremy Renner (there’s Hawkeye!) stars as the best player of the groupâhe has never been “it”âwho hopes to retire from the game undefeated (untagged?). He’s joined by fellow big names like Jon Hamm, Ed Helms, Hannibal Buress, Isla Fisher, and Rashida Jones.
That’s one hell of a cast for a movie based on a game we figured we all left behind in elementary school, though this trailer shows this is less about the game and more about the friends we play it with. So not only will we get a movie based on the game of tag, we might actually gets one that makes us cry.
Tag comes running into theaters on June 15, 2018.
