Warning: Spoilers for the Supernatural Season 10 finale are ahead. Turn back to the road so far if you’re not caught up!
Season 11 of The CW’s Supernatural premieres on October 7. The trailer for the upcoming season should be dropping soon, but in the meantime, let’s over-analyze the newly released poster, shall we? The trippy image features Crowley (Mark Sheppard), Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki), Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles), and Castiel (Misha Collins) in between two states. The blurred effects show darker or at least angrier sides of the characters, and the ominous tagline says, “Between darkness and deliverance.”
Oooh.
Darkness arrived in force at the end of Season 10, but little is known about its origins. So far we know it predates the Bible, and the entity was so destructive that God created the archangels to fight it and imprisoned it by using the Mark of Cain as a lock. To summarize, it’s terrible. With the Mark of Cain gone, the Darkness is now on the loose and given its extreme power, it’s possible the Winchesters will have to call upon God and/or Lucifer for assistance.
But what would the consequences of working with Lucifer be? As the Winchesters team up to control the Darkness, how far will they go? That’s been a consistent theme in Supernatural for the past few years, and both brothers have stepped past the line to do what they believe is right. They’ve become darker. Maybe Season 11 will bring some deliverance thoughâfor all of them. I believe each of these characters has the power to choose his own path and alignment. Though deliverance could mean God will return and save them all and the world at large, perhaps it’s more personal.
