Mommy’s home!
Supernatural is pulling out all the stops for tonight’s fall finale: the return of Lucifer (Mark Pelligrino) and The Cage, Dean (Jensen Ackles) confronts Amara (Emily Swallow) about their connection, the possible appearance from God (!) himself … yeah, it’s no wonder that The CW’s longest-running series is going to take a hiatus over the holidays. The Supernatural fans are going to need a break from all the jam-packed craziness “O Brother Where Art Thou?” is going to serve up!
But wait, there’s more: the midseason finale is also going to give us the return of Crowley’s (Mark Sheppard) even more evil mother, Rowena (Ruth Connell). Since Rowena has been MIA for a while this season, Nerdist got the mother of evil herself on the line to chat about what fans can expect from her big return in the episode.
Check out our full Q&A with Connell below!
Nerdist: It should come as no surprise that tonight’s episode is definitely going to end on some crazy cliffhanger. What went through your mind when you first read the ending in the script?
Ruth Connell: What happens in the very last scene, I really can’t say anything about. [Laughs] But what I can say is that this episode and the next episode are very much a pair. There’s a huge cliffhanger and you absolutely have to tune in to both to understand what’s really going on since they are so tied together. When I read the last scene, I honestly didn’t see it coming. I was like, “Holy smokes!” It has to do with Sam, Dean, Lucifer, the Darkness, Crowley and myself. You won’t see it coming.
N: We haven’t seen Rowena in a while, so what has she been up to in the past few episodes?
RC: When it picks up, you see that Crowley actually needs something from Rowena and it has to do with my old buddies, the Winchesters. We’ll see how much duress she’s under and not everything might be as it seems. But she is the most powerful witch of all time and she is perhaps the only person who can do what they need. It’s the same old story: they used her to take the spell off of Castiel [Misha Collins] and they need her ability to do something to help them now. So they’re all going to try to be nice to each other for a while, and we’ll see how well that goes. It never goes well with witches!
N: I know we’re going to get to learn more about Rowena’s past, will that come up in tonight’s episode?
RC: We’ll see some more backstory in episode 10. There were some things that I just imagined for Rowena’s backstory and now we literally see what I’ve always imagined. I love that the fans are going to get to find out her and why she is the way she is. We get to go to some really emotional places.
N: What do you think is going to surprise fans the most about what’s coming up in the finale?
RC: The cliffhanger. There are so many twists and turns. Fans will not be disappointed.
N: What are you most excited for fans to see from the episode?
RC: The fact that Mark Pelligrino is back in this episode, and Amara is in the episode, I’m excited for everyone to see how all this will tie in together. The story between Amara and Dean is really exciting. And you’ll see Rowena get reunited with the Book of the Damned. She’ll really be in her element so it will be interesting to see what kind of magic she unleashes. That, and the mega crush that Rowena has on Lucifer. [Laughs]
