SUPERGIRL’s James Olsen is Now [SPOILER], But Who is That?

There are big things ahead for Mehcad Brooks‘ James Olsen on Supergirl this season. Last night’s premiere episode shook up the relationship between James and Kara (Melissa Benoist), but that’s only the beginning of James’ journey this season.

Before you read any further, consider this your spoiler warning if you’re not caught up with the season two premiere of Supergirl!

Via Entertainment Weekly, Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg has revealed that James will assume the costumed identity of Guardian, a heroic vigilante on the streets of National City. “These next few episodes are going to make [Jimmy] realize that being a photographer… is not enough for him,” explained Kreisberg. “So he’s going to go on a pretty exciting career trajectory that we’re really pumped by. James is going to decide that he can no longer sit back and be a sidekick, so he’s going to decide to become a vigilante and he’s going to become Guardian — complete with the shield — which is going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara, because he has decided not to tell her.

Now, you may be wondering: “who is the Guardian?” Well, that’s why we’re here to help!

The Guardian is actually a Jack Kirby co-creation that dates back to 1942. Joe Simon and Kirby envisioned the Guardian as a Captain America-like hero who also carried an indestructible shield. But unlike Cap, the Guardian has no superpowers. The first Guardian was Jim Harper, and was incorporated into Kirby’s run on the Jimmy Olsen comic during the ’70s as the head of security for Project Cadmus. Somehow, we doubt that Jimmy Olsen will follow that path on Supergirl.

The second Guardian was Mal Duncan from the Teen Titans, who also took on the role in the fan-favorite Young Justice animated series, and back in 2005, DC introduced Jake Jordan, the third Guardian. This, however, will be the first time that James Olsen has assumed the role. In the comics, James’ counterpart, Jimmy Olsen never assumed a serious heroic persona. But somehow we doubt that Olsen’s Turtle Boy would have worked in the world of Supergirl.

From the way that Kreisberg described it, James’ Guardian will be acting more like a non-lethal Punisher on the series. And he won’t be alone. “He’s recruited Winn (Jeremy Jordan) to help him,” said Kreisberg. “Winn is his man in the van, so the two of them are doing this together. Winn and James together is comedy gold. Watching Winn, as he takes his job at the DEO, but then he’s lying to everybody about how he’s spending his nights, because he’s going out with James, and how he walks in exhausted or walks in with a black eye and says he walked into a door, is the fun excitement of building these first 10 episodes.”
