SUPERGIRL Recap: The Darkest Place

Editor’s note: This post contains spoilers for Supergirl. Proceed with caution if you’re not caught up.

During the last few minutes of last week’s episode of Supergirl, Mon-El was abducted by Lillian Luthor and her squad of goons. This week’s episode “The Darkest Place” wasted no time in jumping into the Cadmus world and taking several left turns. To find out where things are headed now, keep reading!

The best place to start is right where we were left hanging last week. Cadmus took Mon-El and we didn’t quite know why. But as with most things, the abduction was a plot to get Kara’s attention, which of course worked like a charm.

When Kara showed up, she was confronted by the real Hank! As if it wasn’t surprising enough that he survived his fight with Jeremiah and J’onn, here we learned that he had been transformed into Cyborg Superman. Apparently, he was saved by Cadmus who took it upon themselves to give him an “upgrade.” As a result, he’s now stronger than Kara. While both Kara and Mon-El were behind bars, Lillian explained that her distaste for aliens stems from her blame on them for sending her son Lex to prison.

But of course, Cadmus isn’t the new kid on the block; the organization has been around for more than a decade. Considering how recent Lex’s imprisonment was, Lillian and the group’s feelings about aliens go deeper than that. We’ve already seen shades of their opinion before. In short, Cadmus wants to take them out for the so-called greater good.

Lillian then shot Mon-El as a means of coercing Kara to wear a helmet that would absorb radiation from the solar flare. Once she went through with wearing it, Kara lost her powers and was distracted and weakened enough for Lillian to draw her blood. Lillian then gave Cyborg Superman some of Kara’s blood, allowing him to snoop around the Fortress of Solitude in search of “Project Medusa.”

After Kara was returned to her cell, she had a heart-to-heart with Mon-El. Believing she wouldn’t survive, Kara gave Mon a note to send to her sister Alex, and discussed his past and regrets regarding Daxam. Just as he was about to tell Kara something about his home planet, Jeremiah Danvers (YUP!) showed up but decided to stay there afterwards and let them go without him.

But Kara and Mon weren’t the only ones who had some excitement this week. James (a.k.a. Guardian) got a little bit more of the spotlight. Out to avenge his wife’s death, Phillip Karnowsky, another vigilante, has been targeting criminals who evade justice thanks to technicalities. That said, because of how similar Guardian’s gear is, the police are under the impression that James is responsible for Karnowsky’s recent crimes. Thankfully, however, James escaped the line of fire by the conclusion of “The Darkest Place.”

Alex also got her fair share of time in the limelight. With everything that was going on, Alex turned back to Maggie for help. Just as Maggie was starting to get friendly again, Alex launched into how hurt she was after having her heart shattered the week before. The scene was full of emotion, and was yet again a great way to ground the alien-filled series.

Speaking of relationships, J’onn found out the hard way why M’gann was so hesitant to offer her own blood: she’s a White Martian, not a Green one like him. Aside from anger on J’onn’s part, the result of this revelation was horrific visions of his dead family. Despite M’gann’s denial of her kind’s terrible treatment of the Green Martians, J’onn was furious and made her transform into her true form before he attacked her.

According to M’gann, White Martians found a way to weaponize their blood and use it to turn Green Martians white just like them. Angry, J’onn decided to punish M’gann and let her “rot” in her cell, which is a great alternative to death. Sadly that won’t help much as there’s nothing they can do to stop his transformation… yet.
