SUPER MARIO MAKER Idea Booklet is a Bizarre Scrapbook That Reveals New Surprises

The physical version of Super Mario Maker will include an idea booklet that will help new level designers make their courses the best they can be and show them a bunch of fun Mario-related art. Ahead of the game hitting North American shelves tomorrow, a PDF version the booklet has been made available for download, so check it out here.

The file is 12MB and features examples of innovative level design, creative use of level elements, and a bunch of very pretty Nintendo art. There’s no real sense of linear organization to the booklet, which makes it seem like more of an informative scrapbook than a manual, but it should still be useful and fun to flip through. Bonus: the numbers next to certain images–like the ones next to EXAMPLE 1 in this article’s featured image–will provide access to videos in the game’s online manual.

Longtime Mario designer Takashi Tezuka previously said of the booklet, “I think the book that comes with the game will help people hone their skills and learn techniques they can add to their own courses. If we were to name this book, we would call it ‘The Seeds of Super Mario Maker.’ We give you all the basics to make something great.”

Here’s what we’re most fascinated by:

This incredibly lanky version of Mario is what you get when you expose Mario to the Luigi Mushroom, and we are both creeped out and blown away by it. The new power-up was covertly revealed in an official Nintendo video from late July. Full disclosure: we’ve already played (and reviewed) Super Mario Maker, so we’ve seen and used this before. We assure you that playing with “skinny Mario” is well worth the heebie-jeebies you might get from seeing Mario in this new light.
