You Can Play SUPER MARIO 64 with 24 People with This Online Mod

Even though it wasn’t truly the first 3D video game, 1996’s Mario 64 really woke people up to what three-dimensional console gaming could really be. In bringing the antics of a certain energetic high-pitched fella (who’s no longer a plumber) to the masses all over again, Nintendo 64’s introductory title really changed the way people would play and interact with video games. And now, this new mod has really changed the way people can play Mario 64.

Via a recent post on Kotaku, Super Mario 64 Online by Kaze Emanuar, Melonspeedruns, and Marshivolt allows up to 24 players to connect and play a single game of Mario 64 all at once. Per the video, users will be able to play not only as Mario, but as Luigi, Peach (as confusing as that might be, considering the game’s narrative), Yoshi, Toad, Wario, and Waluigi. Anyone who’s tried completing a game that’s designed to be played together will know tell you that it’s not an easy task. So, as one might imagine, cohesively working together as a group in a game designed for only one jovial “Woo-Hoo”-ing sprite at a time is even tougher.

However, Super Mario 64 Online‘s designers seem to know the fun is in the games you can create along the way, like hide and seek or battle royale. Though, it is actually possible to finish the game as intended, like you’re part of some kind of 64-bit fellowship of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Should you and your friends want to join in on the multiplayer Mario fun, there are instructions for Super Mario 64 Online in this video’s description.

What other single-player Nintendo games would be amazing with this sort of mod? StarFox seems like it’d get a little too crowded but a GoldenEye level absolutely full of players to fight seems like the best thing ever. Let’s discuss in the comments below!
