SUICIDE SQUAD’s Cara Delevingne Talks About Playing Enchantress

The Joker, Harley Quinn, and Deadshot are the most media friendly faces of the upcoming Suicide Squad movie. That’s to be expected when Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith are playing iconic comic book characters. But there are at least seven other members of the team who will make their live-action debut next year.

One of the team members is Enchantress, as played by British actress Cara Delevingne. While promoting her starring role in the film Paper Towns on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Delevingne shared some information about her character in the movie.

“The part I’m playing, I’m actually playing two different parts,” explained Delevingne. “It’s like an actresses’ dream. I’m playing opposites a mousy kind of scientist and then a crazy, feral witch — which is great. They’re both sides of my personality, so that’s nice.”

This actually tracks with the comic book history of Enchantress. As originally created by Bob Haney and Howard Purcell, Enchantress was a heroic character before later writers turned her into a villainess. As a member of the Suicide Squad in the ‘80s, she had two personas: her human self, June Moone and Enchantress, whom was later revealed to be an evil entity that had fused with June.

Delevingne also told Meyers how she won the role even though she didn’t have a copy of the script to work with.

“I went in and auditioned before there was even a script,” said Delevingne. “I think I was one of the first people David Ayer, the director, actually cast. But I ended up just doing a monologue from Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?… Very superhero-y”

Suicide Squad will open on August 5. 2016. And if it’s anything like the comic, not all of the characters will make it out alive.
