Stream Tame Impala’s Excellent New Record CURRENTS

Yesterday was my birthday, but also a schizophrenic fever dream. It was the last day of Comic-Con, of which I remember very little due to sheer exhaustion. Though it wasn’t the most chaotic birthday I have ever had, it certainly had its share of vicissitudes: I woke up at the ass crack of dawn to act a small role in a video, I interviewed Slash onstage at Nerdist’s Conival at Petco Park, I celebrated a job well done with the rest of the editors, crawled through traffic on a bus-ride back to LA, and fell asleep at my desk by accident. I still don’t feel like I am on earth, and I especially don’t feel like I am any older or different.

At least I didn’t until I listened through Tame Impala’s new record, Currents, and heard their new track, “Yes, I’m Changing” (scroll to the 13:50 mark). The track, which sounds in its initial moments like an Angelo Badalamenti composition from Twin Peaks, is at once a proclamation of vulnerability and confidence. With the support of astral and glinting synths, lead singer Kevin Parker (a self-proclaimed isolationist), sings about actively evolving into a new person: “Yes I’m changing / yes I’m gone / yes I’m older / yes I’m moving on.” Though there is a firm, constructive feeling in knowing that things are moving forward, it’s an idea that is also terrifying and begs specific questions about where one is coming from and where one is going. In a weird circuitous way, you haven’t been what you are becoming, so what will it be like when you arrive? Parker makes this spiritual conundrum sound urgent despite the gauzy, calmed instrumentation, but I can’t help trusting him that everything is going to be just fine.

Tame Impala’s Currents drops July 17 via Interscope and is well worth your time.
