Steven Spielberg may be getting back into the alien invasion business, but this time, he won’t be leading the invasion by himself. Empire Magazine is reporting that Spielberg’s Amblin Partners have picked up The Fall for development as a feature film. The Fall was written by Pete Bridges, a screenwriter whose previous script, Resurface, landed on the annual Black List.
In The Fall, a divorced couple is forced to cross through Atlanta in the middle of an alien invasion in the hopes of reaching their children, who had been left home alone before the event. That story should sound very similar to anyone who saw Spielberg’s 2005 take on War of the Worlds (pictured above).
Whatever similarities the two films may share in story, it will still come down to the execution of the film to make each project unique. Presumably, Spielberg and his production partners felt that The Fall was worthy of a stand-alone movie. Whether Spielberg takes an active hand in its development remains to be seen. Spielberg’s movie slate is pretty full through 2019, with Ready Player One, The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, and Indiana Jones 5 ahead of him. If Spielberg wanted to direct The Fall, it would push back that film for several years.
This news comes on the heels of a deal between Amblin and Showtime that will place up to six movies Amblin Entertainment and DreamWorks Pictures labels, as well as three Participant Media films on Showtime through 2021. That means that Ready Player One, The Fall, and other Amblin projects would initially debut on Showtime following their theatrical and home video release.
