Stephen Colbert Weighs In on SCOTUS Decision

First off, let’s hear it for marriage equality! This week’s Supreme Court ruling makes same-sex marriage a right nationwide! This is one giant step forward for The United States and the decision is one the country can – excuse the obvious pun – feel a great amount of pride for.

Smarter folks have and will continue to say more profound things than I could ever muster, but I would be remiss if I were not to include these incredibly inspiring words from the proceedings:

“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right. The judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit is reversed. It is so ordered.” — Justice Kennedy

Not that this remarkable news needs anything to make it better, but comedic mastermind Stephen Colbert decided to share some of his thoughts about it in a short segment on Friday.

In a way that is distinctly “Colbert” he addressed the SCOTUS decision in a way that only he could and only makes us happier we’ll soon see his return to television. Peppering in jokes that allude to there being a fairly sparse pride week in North Dakota, a shot at “gays with commitment issues,” and making sure to ridicule the four Supreme Court Justices who were against the ruling while doing a spot-on impression of them. ColbertGif
