Stay In For Valentine’s Day With These New Releases on Netflix

This weekend is a time to spend with loved ones and to fondly remember US presidents. It’s also a perfect opportunity to spend three days catching up on what is new on Netflix. This article is for those from column B.

Just because you might not have someone to buy chocolates for or send flowers to doesn’t mean you can’t have big weekend plans. Let’s take a look at what’s hitting Netflix for the second half of February and get ready to fall in love with the streaming service all over again.

If you want to avoid the romance on Valentine’s Day, then check out Felony, releasing on February 14th. The film stars Tom Wilkinson (The Lone Ranger), Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby), and Jai Courtney (Divergent) as three detectives all involved in either covering up or solving the case of an accident that put a child in a coma. Nothing can really remind us of the spirit of Valentine’s Day like a good crime thriller.

Recover from your crazy weekend on February 16th and tackle the romance you avoided head-on with Save The Date. This indy outing stars Lizzy Caplan (The Interview) and Alison Brie (Community) as sisters exploring their different concepts of love, commitment, and happiness in a relationship. It sounds like just about everything you didn’t want to watch on Saturday.

On February 17th you can hit both sides of the viewer spectrum with a horror movie and documentary both releasing. The Last House on Cemetery Lane stars Lee Bane as a writer who moves to the titular house for some peace and quite, only to discover that it is haunted by malevolent spirits, and it is up to him to put them to rest. Once you have had your fill of ghosts and frights you can also check out The Overnighters. The Overnighters documents the story of Jay Reinke, a pastor in North Dakota, who helped the unemployed works that were drawn to the state by their shale oil industry.

By this time, I’m sure you’ll feel a little drained emotionally from all of the terror, drama, and crying the previous titles will bring forth. Thankfully February 18th has you mostly covered. Comedian Gabriel Iglesias’s The Fluffy Movie releases on the 18th to bring more of his manic style of stand-up comedy and impersonations to the world. However, if you want to dig deeper into the feels over the week there is plenty of that too. The found-footage, sci-fi romp Earth To Echo also releases that day and follows four friends as they stumble across an alien unearthed in their neighborhood. Not interested in aliens, friendship, and camcorders? Why not check out a period-piece thriller with In Secret. Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers: Age of Ultron) Tom Felton (Harry Potter Series) and Oscar Isaac (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) star in a story about love, betrayal, and murder set against the backdrop of 1860s France.

Hopefully you don’t burn out yet, because February 19th marks the release of White Bird In A Blizzard on Netflix streaming. Shailene Woodley (The Fault In Our Stars) stars as a young girl, named Kat, exploring her teenage years and wild urges after her mother, played by Eva Green (Sin City: A Dame To Kill For) disappears. Years later, Kat searches for answers as to where her mother went.

Finally, on February 20th, The Netflix Original series Richie Rich will release its first season. A modern retelling of the classic, comic-strip character sees Jake Brennan portraying the world’s richest kid after he finds a way to turn the vegetables he hates into an alternative green energy. The series will follow Richie, his friends, his family, and his robot maid on their various adventures. Sadly, it does not seem there will be a cameo from previous Richie Rich, Macaulay Culkin, but hopefully that will be rectified if the series gets a second season.

That will just about do it for the second half of February on Netflix, and it should hopefully be enough to distract those who are not looking forward to Valentine’s Day. Let us know which one of these movies (or the series) you are looking forward to most, and check back next month for even more releases.
