STARSHIP TROOPERS Gets a Very Dramatic Fan-Made Trailer

Starship Troopers might have been misunderstood during its time, but over the last two decades it has developed a passionate fanbase. And what’s not to love about a satirical science fiction movie, one with amazing special effects, that follows a team of young soldiers going to war with giant bugs that have a tendency to go “splat” with maximum gore?

But just because the 1997 film is memorable for being kind of (uh…definitely?) absurd, that doesn’t mean we can’t take it seriously. Which is just what this modern, fan-made trailer from YouTube user Tim Gonzales does, by making it look like a super intense futuristic war movie.

Gonzales says he made this trailer, which we came across at The A.V. Club, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of director Paul Verhoeven‘s film. This is really well done, with President Reagan’s speech perfectly setting the tone. But there’s one thing holding us back from being able to really accept the idea this could be a serious piece of art.

LOOK AT THE BABY NEIL PATRICK HARRIS!

Obviously this is really different from the original 1997 trailer, mainly because someone watching it back then probably said, “LOOK AT THE GROWN UP DOOGIE HOWSER!”

Here’s what that looked like.

If you are too young to remember the ’90s, the answer to your question is: Yes, that’s really what it was like back then. It was a weird time.

But hey! At least it gave us a ridiculous movie about a space war with bugs! A film so silly we’re still having fun with it 20 years later.

What other absurd movie from the ’90s should get a modern trailer? It would “bug” us if you didn’t tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
