STARGATE is Making a Comeback

Stargate. You know it. You love it. The 1994 sci-fi adventure film that spawned a franchise that spanned multiple audience-beloved television series is finally coming back to the big screen in the form of a reboot, as announced by MGM and Warner Bros. earlier today. According to the official press release sent out by the studios, original writer/director team Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin will return with Emmerich once again in the director seat and Devlin in a producing role (no other writer has been named at this time). Also, as per the standard business model, the plan is for the new film to begin a new trilogy for the franchise.

“We couldn’t be more excited to once again partner with Roland and Dean, the world-class creators of the original Stargate,” said MGM chairman Gary Barber, “to bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations. Stargate is one of the biggest titles in MGM’s vast library, and we look forward to adding this great franchise to our slate.” Emmerich and Devlin went on to add “the Stargate universe is one that we missed terribly, and we cannot wait to get going on imagining new adventures and situations for the trilogy. This story is very close to our hearts, and getting the chance to revisit this world is in many ways like a long lost child that has found its way back home.”

Considering the announcement, one must wonder where it leaves Emmerich’s planned sequels for Independence Day. This was also addressed in the announcement, “[Emmerich] is also in pre-production on ID Forever Part I and Part II, back-to-back sequels to his hit film.” So it seems those two sequels will shoot back-to-back before cameras begin rolling on Stargate. Odds are the reboot script will be written during Independence Day’s production.

It’s no surprise MGM wants to bring one of its most successful hits back to the big screen. It is, however, a bit surprising they went back to Emmerich to do it. It will be interesting to see what new ideas the director can bring to the table after 20 years of being away from the franchise.

I believe that the Stargate Series could and should never run out of their exciting episodes. There are so many advancements in the area of alien, space crafts and the universe as a whole. It’s Syfi…..fill it with leading edge thoughts and scripts. Keep it exciting…..I love all of it….I would, however, like to see them link up with the Ancients and introduce their new enemies and allow SG Teams to combine the conquered weaponry of their past enemies mixed with some good ole earthly ingenuity making a formidable weapon and weapons platform in assistance the Ancients and their warring struggles. I wish I could get a part on the set.

  7. Jason Thornton says:

I was hoping for a conclusion to stargate universe or some type of ending since they just left it hanging open but a Trilogy will be great too.  Hopefully it’ll have a glimps into what happened after 3 yrs in stasis pods.

  8. Nick bamf.2 says:

  9. I was hoping they would make at least a Stargate Universe Movie or miniseries to finish the great story they left us hanging with at the end. I am excited to see what they come up with for this SG reboot movie.

  10. Karan says:

cant wait to see what they come up. universe was a disaster but definitely waiting to see something along the lines of SG-1 + Atlantis Spin-off. After all i’m curious about what could come next.

  11. Howard says:

This is brillant news, SGU almost killed the whole franchise. A reboot of the SG/SG-1 one story is very welcome. Emmerich vision can bring a new expansion to build upon the ideas over the past 20 years.

  12. Rui Lopes says:

    best movie series ever 🙂

  13. cody says:

agreed. however i will take whatever kind of a stargate fix i can get. i just hope they build off of the universe thats already created and not start from scratch.

  14. Lets hope so, but doubtful.

  15. Michael says:

Unfortunately, most of the original cast are to old to perform many of the acts that would be required. However, I agree, if it were possible, I’d lover to see the original cast.

  16. Christopher says:

plus they don’t have the macro and they are like 7,900,000,000,000 LY away from pegusis
