Are These the STAR WARS Universe’s True Top 10 Best Lightsabers?

An elegant weapon. For a more…civilized age.”

Of all the unique sci-fi creations that the Star Wars saga has given us, up near the top of that list has to be the lightsaber. From the moment the world saw that first saber switched on—when Obi-Wan Kenobi gave Luke his father’s old Jedi laser sword in A New Hope—we knew we were witnessing the coolest weapon ever in sci-fi movie history.

Now the folks at StarWars.com have tallied what they consider to be the top 10 coolest lightsabers in all of Star Wars. That includes all seven films, plus The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series. So watch the video above… and when you’re done, we can, of course, gripe about what wasn’t on their list.

…Okay, so you’ve watched the video now right? All right, now let’s talks about what didn’t make the cut.

Of course, the video’s ranking might anger some old school Original Trilogy purists, mostly for its lack of key lightsabers from the OT—namely, Darth Vader’s and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s. But, to be fair, it’s easy to see why the staff of StarWars.com chose what they did. Sure, Darth Vader is—and will probably always be—the baddest of the badasses when it comes to the Sith Lords. But in comparison to other Dark Side Force users, his lightsaber is pretty basic. Even still, if were making this list, I would have included it; it is the first “evil” saber we see in the saga. But I also kind of get why it didn’t make the cut.

Also sure to be controversial is the lack of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s lightsaber, which used first in the legendary duel the left his apprentice Anakin Skywalker a charred, angry husk in Revenge of the Sith, and again when he faced that same apprentice some two decades later in A New Hope. While it’s certainly a cool saber, it’s nearly identical in style to Anakin/Luke’s. Since that’s the first lightsaber we see in the entire saga, if I had to pick between the two, I’d pick Luke’s as well.

So what do you think of this list? Annoyed that Luke Skywalker’s second saber from Return of the Jedi was left off? Mad that Yoda and Qui-Gon’s blades didn’t make the cut? Just what do they have against green anyway?? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
