STAR WARS: THE ROLEPLAYING GAME is Back with a 30th Anniversary Edition

After the release of Return of the Jedi in 1983, the fate of the Star Wars universe wasn’t certain. Sure, there were Ewok live-action films and some so-so cartoons, but not much else was happening (aside from making stories during playtime with Kenner’s action figures and play sets). That changed with the release of West End Games’ Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game in 1987. The game book and source book opened new doors and allowed fans to join the galaxy far, far away in an immersive way that involved rolling a whole lot of D6s.

The Roleplaying Game evolved and expanded from 1987 until the late ’90s; it was a gateway RPG for a whole squadron of fans. It’s coming back for a special 30th anniversary edition!

Fantasy Flight Games announced the news on Wednesday. They’re the current Star Wars RPG license holders, and though it’s taken me more than a minute to get used to the Fantasy Flight Games rules system, I have a blast playing their titles. But they know how attached fans are to the West End Games catalog, so they’re releasing new editions of Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game and The Star Wars Sourcebook.

The hardcovers are re-created using content from the first printings of the books; the rules, adventures, and art from the original release will be included. The books will come together in a snazzy slipcover. Whether you want to play the game or comb through the information for tidbits that have been included in the current Star Wars canon (including concepts such as the Imperial Security Bureau), this is a wonderful way to acquire your own copies (or new versions) without having to turn to Amazon and eBay.

The 30th anniversary editions will be available later in 2017.

Have you played West End Games’ Star Wars RPG? Tell me about your character in the comments.
