It’s almost time for the Jedi to end. But with two months to go until Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters, it’s amazing that we’ve only had one trailer—that is until Monday night brought us some seriously epic new footage. Now, if you think that we’ve spent hours and hours pouring over the new trailer in search of hidden clues…you’re absolutely right! It’s what we do! And that’s why today’s Nerdist News is all about everything that you missed in the new trailer for The Last Jedi.
There are potentially major spoilers ahead! When even director Rian Johnson is warning fans that the new trailer is spoiler heavy, you should probably listen! But if you really want to know the details, we’ve got those too.
Join Mothership writer and mother to all porgs, Amy Vorpahl, as she guest hosts this insanely deep dive into The Last Jedi‘s dark and intense trailer. We were expecting something along the lines of Empire Strikes Back, and there were some callbacks to that movie. Kylo Ren’s connection to his mother, General Leia, definitely struck us as something similar to Leia’s connection to Luke at the end of Empire. And any Star Wars movie with Walkers is just inviting comparisons to Empire‘s signature battle sequence.
Our first glimpse of Supreme Leader Snoke in the flesh may shed some light on his character, and we suspect his big speech is actually from two different parts of the film. The heart of the trailer seems to belong to Rey and Kylo Ren, and whether we may be witnessing the birth of a grey Jedi order who can achieve true balance with the Force. And of course, there were more Porgs, and all-too brief glimpses at the new ships and technology making their debut in the film. The trailer also gave a peak at the parallel storylines between Luke and Rey on Ach-To, and Finn’s adventure on Canto Bight, including his rematch with Captain Phasma!
