STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Will Be Rated…

Thanks to Making Star Wars, and an official document from the MPAA, we now know that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be rated PG-13. This rating is due to “sci-fi action and violence.” Many have suspected the film would be rated PG-13 based on the overall tone of the advertising for the film, as well as the moment a bloody hand print can be seen on Finn’s stormtrooper helmet before he takes it off.

No wonder he seems so haunted after he rips the helmet off. In a universe where just about every weapon cauterizes a wound immediately, Finn would have to do something pretty brutal to have someone smearing blood on his helmet. The First Order’s tactics also appear to be quite intense and brutal compared to the Empire in the original films, so this moment may not even be what earned the film the PG-13.

This makes The Force Awakens the second Star Wars film in a row to be rated PG-13, following The Revenge of the Sith back in 2005, which received its rating for “sci-fi violence and some intense images.” I remember quite a lot of action, lightsaber fights, and Anakin killing a bunch of kids off-screen, but I can’t remember what intense images they were…
