STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Deleted Scene Reveals a Secret About Maz Kanata

This post contains minor spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and possibly bigger spoilers for future Star Wars films. You’ve been warned!

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o) asks a lot of questions about Rey (Daisy Ridley), but Maz is bit of a mystery herself. Within the film, it’s implied that Maz is close to both Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and General Leia (Carrie Fisher). It’s also mentioned that Maz is over 1,000 years old, and she displays an innate understanding of the Force when Rey experiences her vision.

While Maz claims that she is “no Jedi,” one of the deleted scenes from The Force Awakens hints that she has Force powers of her own. While speaking with Collider, SFX Supervisor Chris Corbould revealed that “there was a particular part of a scene that never made it, where they go underneath the castle and they’re going into the underground passageways, and stormtroopers are coming down the stairs and Maz uses her powers to collapse the ceiling.”

“From my point of view, [that] worked absolutely brilliantly because you had all the main actors running up and then Maz does her bit and then the whole ceiling collapses in front of them, but that never made it,” added Corbould. “That was a shot I was quite proud of, actually, it worked really, really well.”

Director J.J. Abrams has previously said that Maz originally left with Han on the Millennium Falcon and went to the Resistance base on D’Qar, where she would have given Luke’s lightsaber to Leia, as seen in the trailers. However, Abrams ultimately decided to change that sequence and left Maz back on Takodana.

If Maz really does have Force powers as depicted in the deleted scene, that may help explain how she came across Luke’s lightsaber. Maz’s connection to the Force could also be explored in Star Wars: Episode VIII.
