The Next STAR WARS Animated Series is Set in the Sequel Trilogy Era

Star Wars Rebels ended in March, and since the series finale, fans have been wondering about what the next Star Wars animated television series would be… and now we know! Lucasfilm and Disney have announced Star Wars Resistance, an anime-inspired series set in the sequel trilogy era. Specifically, the story falls on the timeline before The Force Awakens in an “uncharted” area.

As you can see in the above key art for the adventure-geared series, BB-8 will appear alongside new characters as well as familiar faces like Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma. Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie are set to reprise their roles by voicing the characters. Maybe, just maybe, Phasma will finally get the on-screen treatment she deserves.

Resistance will focus primarily on a new character named Kazuda Xiono. According to the press release, he’s “a young pilot recruited by the Resistance and tasked with a top-secret mission to spy on the growing threat of the First Order.” Creator Dave Filoni said the idea for the show, which will spotlight Kazudo’s piloting, came out of his interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots. “There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time,” he said in a statement.

In addition to Filoni, Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars vets Athena Portillo, Justin Ridge, and Amy Beth Christenson and Star Wars newcomer Brandon Auman are working behind the scenes. Voice talent for Resistance includes Christopher Sean, Myrna Velasco, Scott Lawrence, Jim Rash, Suzie McGrath, Bobby Moynihan, Donald Faison, and Josh Brener, though we don’t have details just yet about who they’re all playing.

Star Wars Resistance will premiere this fall on the Disney Channel in the U.S. and then on Disney XD.

Are you looking forward to Star Wars Resistance? What sort of information do you hope to learn about the pre-sequel trilogy timeline? Let us know in the comments.
