STAR WARS REBELS Introduces New “Lazy” Droid, Chopper

Meet Chopper. This is the droid you’re looking for if you’re planning to watch Star Wars Rebels. He’s an essential member of the Ghost crew and is charged with keeping the ship running for the heroes. Though he looks similar to fellow astromech R2-D2, he’s not exactly the plucky and helpful droid we’re used to seeing in this universe. Chopper, also know as C1-10P, sounds like a bit of a curmudgeon.

Executive Producer Dave Filoni explained in the video introduction to the character: “If Artoo is the family dog, Chopper is the cat.” My inner crazy cat lady is pleased to hear that felines and Star Wars are colliding in this way. The astromech will assist when he must, but, apparently is never in a hurry. Like other aspects of the upcoming series, his design was inspired by Ralph McQuarrie’s art.

Given the number of times R2-D2 has saved lives in the films and in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the fact that a droid character will be front and center in Rebels is good news. It’s a nod to the past, but the different personality makes the character fresh enough for the future. Bring on the cranky droid!

Everyone knows that “droids” in the Star Wars universe aren’t actually computer-controlled robots. They’re more like Eggman’s robots in Sonic the Hedgehog: they’re piloted by cute little animals. Here’s an example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbBdixsqC3U

If he wasn’t programmed or “trained” then how could he be curmudgeonly? Would’nt he just sit there and do nothing without programming? HE IS A ROBOT.
