Steve Onotera, also know to many as Samurai Guitarist, has just given us something we never knew we wanted in our lives. The young man, in his late twenties, is known for doing covers of famous and geeky songs in various guitar styles, and his newest video takes on the most famous geeky songs possible; the music of Star Wars. Very few people, if any, would ever have thought they would enjoy a bluegrass medley of John Williams’s universally recognized songs from the original Star Wars films, but they are here and the Imperial March has never sounded so cheery and inviting before.
Onotera has been making videos and posting them online for about a year and a half, but he has already amassed quite a following. He finds new and interesting ways to approach the songs that he covers, whether it be by changing the genre, or finding unorthodox instruments to play. Outside of other medleys from Super Mario Bros. 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Onotera has also performed a “guitarapella” cover of Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,” and a version of Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper” played entirely with iPad apps.
What did you think of the Samurai Guitarist and his down home rendition of a Star Wars medley? Let us know in the comments below, and also check out more of Steve Onotera’s videos on his YouTube page. Now, excuse me while I go download that cowbell app.
