STAR WARS # 15 Preview: Luke and Obi-Wan Share a Flashback Adventure

After the events depicted in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi went into exile on Tatooine to watch over Luke Skywalker. And for the next two decades, Ben Kenobi rarely left the desert…but that doesn’t mean that he never had any adventures!

Within Marvel’s Star Wars ongoing series, Luke recently discovered a journal that belonged to his mentor. Star Wars # 15 will be a full-length flashback from the journal that explores the reason why Luke’s uncle, Owen Lars, forbade Obi-Wan from being a part of his nephew’s life. Regular Star Wars writer Jason Aaron is joined by guest artist Mike Mayhew for this issue. Mayhew is an accomplished cover artist who has previously illustrated Dark Horse Comics’ The Star Wars, which was based on George Lucas’ early draft for the first movie.

Marvel has released the first four pages from Star Wars # 15, which depicts a very young Luke and his friend Biggs Darklighter playing around with a T-16 Skyhopper. This was something that was mentioned in A New Hope, but it’s been rarely depicted in Star Wars’ ancillary media. The way that Aaron stages the scene actually seems to invoke The Phantom Menace without going full tilt towards the prequels.

Mayhew’s artwork is particularly eye-catching in these pages. His gift is likenesses, and his take on Owen and Beru appears to resemble their portrayers in the prequels (Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse) with hints of Phil Brown and Shelagh Fraser, the performers who played them in A New Hope.

You can read the first four pages of Star Wars # 15 in our gallery below, along with the single page recap and the cover by Mayhew. Star Wars # 15 will be released on Wednesday, January 20.
