STAR TREK’s First Rollercoaster to Seek Out New Thrills and New Heights

For 50 years, Star Trek has traveled the universe to seek out new life and new civilizations. But now it is boldly going where it has never gone before: high above a theme park, with its first official roller coaster.

Germany’s Movie Park—a theme park dedicated to Hollywood with attractions based on films, television, and movie sets—plans to open the officially licensed Star Trek: Operation Enterprise, the first Trekkie coaster in the world, sometime in 2017. We came across this news at Comic Book Resources, and though the translation from the park’s website is a little clunky, they say it will be located at the park’s entrance, where the “eye-catching” attraction will welcome visitors with an “impressive silhouette.”

The coaster will be the second highest edifice in the park, and will feature a “catapult-like” acceleration to start, rather than going up and over a hill like most coasters. Movie Park (the best, most on-the-point name for a theme park ever, because Germans don’t have time for your nonsense) even released a time-lapse video of the beginning stages of construction (a.k.a. it’s just a fun video of giant mounds of dirt being moved around).

Hey, the Federation wasn’t built in a day, you know? Further construction is expected to start in the coming weeks.

It’s not surprising that CBS would license a Star Trek roller coaster now, since they are releasing a new series next year and making the franchise a major focus of the network and their streaming service. We’re definitely on board with this coaster, so long as right before you get catapulted into the sky you hear, “Beam me up, Scotty.” We wonder how that sounds in German…

What would you want to see included in a Star Trek coaster? Journey to the final frontier of our comments below to tell us.
