STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Gets Its First Comic Book Series and Novel

Next month, Star Trek: Discovery will be the first official series in the franchise since Star Trek: Enterprise came to an end in 2005. Enterprise broke with Star Trek tradition by becoming the first television show in the franchise without a comic book tie-in series. However, Star Trek: Discovery viewers will only have to wait a few weeks before the new series gets a comic of its own.

Via The Hollywood Reporter, IDW announced new details about the Star Trek: Discovery comic at the 16th Annual Las Vegas Star Trek Convention. The Discovery comic is being co-written by Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson, with art by Tony Shasteen. Beyer is also a writer for the live-action Star Trek: Discovery series, while Johnson has experience writing the comic book adventures of the original crew in the Kelvin timeline. Shasteen previously collaborated with Johnson on the Star Trek: Boldly Go comic book series.

According to IDW, the Star Trek: Discovery comic is a prequel that explores the backstories of the main Klingon characters, including T’Kuvma, the leader of the Klingons who will be played by Chris Obi on the series.

Also at the convention, Simon & Schuster released the cover for Star Trek: Discovery – Desperate Hours, the first novel based upon the series. Unlike the comic, the focus will squarely fall upon Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham shortly after she is named first officer of the starship Shenzhou. David Mack is the writer of this story.

Simon & Schuster has also revealed the synopsis for this novel, which you can read below:

“Aboard the Starship Shenzhou, Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human woman raised and educated among Vulcans, is promoted to acting first officer. But if she wants to keep the job, she must prove to Captain Philippa Georgiou that she deserves to have it.

She gets her chance when the Shenzhou must protect a Federation colony that is under attack by an ancient alien vessel that has surfaced from the deepest fathoms of the planet’s dark, uncharted sea. As the menace from this mysterious vessel grows stronger, Starfleet declares the colony expendable in the name of halting the threat. To save thousands of innocent lives, Burnham must infiltrate the alien ship. But to do so she needs to face the truth of her troubled past, and seek the aid of a man she has tried to avoid her entire life — until now.”

Star Trek: Discovery will debut on CBS and CBS All-Access on September 24, with Star Trek: Discovery – Desperate Hours, following on September 26. Star Trek: Discovery #1 will be released in October.
