Star Trek Beyond is only about four months away from landing in theaters worldwide, but apparently it’s not too late to add yet another well known actor to the cast. Emmy-winner and Academy Award-nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo (24, X-Men: The Last Stand, The Expanse) has just joined the cast of the film, which is about to undergo reshoots.
According to reports, she’ll be playing “the high command of the Federation”, which Star Trek fans know translates into the President of the United Federation of Planets. The Iranian-born Aghdashloo is the kind of actress that always carries a lot of gravitas, so she’s perfect for a role where she is presumably in charge of hundreds of different worlds.
What this also means is that Star Trek Beyond is probably going to be visiting Earth yet again, since that’s where Federation headquarters is located. The word “Beyond” in the title suggested that the Enterprise was well into its five year mission in deep space by this point, and we wouldn’t have to see good old mother Earth again, especially since the last two Trek movies were particularly Earth centric. The original Star Trek series never visited future Earth at all, but eight of the ten original Trek movies took place partially on Earth, so I guess it’s something of Star Trek film traditon at this point.
Aghdashloo joins returning cast members Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, and Karl Urban , as well as other newcomers to the series like Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella. Star Trek Beyond is being directed by Fast and Furious director Justin Lin, who is taking over for J.J. Abrams (although Abrams’ Bad Robot is still producing). It’s set to hit theaters on July 22, just a month and half shy of Star Trek’s 50th anniversary.
