Star Parks Begin Their Sweet Indie Pop Journey with “Loose Ends” (Premiere)

Animators, here’s a free idea for a short film: “Just a little guy that wakes up inside this big belly. With his books and kitchen table and candles floating in stomach fluid. And at night he stares up through the blow hole and watches the stars. And before he even knows what’s good for him he jumps ship. So then he just has to do what every one else does. Get a job and find a place to live and whatnot. So he just has this longing for this place he couldn’t wait to get out of.”

That abstract is actually Andy Bianculli’s description of “Loose Ends,” a new track created with his new band Star Parks. Bianculli has said he’s “always thought of this song as an animated short,” and it certainly has a sense of lighthearted narrative that ’60s pop music was able to deliver with such jaunty grace. For that reason and others, we’re happy to host the song’s exclusive premiere today on Nerdist.

The Austin-based project rose from the ashes of The Preservation, when Bianculli began writing new material that he recruited Andrew Collberg and Chris Stafford to record with him, and such was the genesis of Star Parks. As for “Loose Ends,” Bianculli isn’t far off the mark with the picture the song paints for him. Our imagination might not be quite that vivid (or anatomically internal), but even the tone and structure of the song, which reminds of acts like Aqualung and Ferraby Lionheart, suggest a cresting, melancholy adventure.

“I think I’ve written a dozen songs that all tried to express the idea of leaving home,” Bianculli said. “Maybe not even home necessarily, but somewhere safe.”

The song will appear on Star Park’s debut album, Don’t Dwell, which will be released on May 13 via Paper Trail Records (and is available for pre-order now). Listen to “Loose Ends” below.
