How Long Could STAR-LORD Survive in Space Unprotected?

According to the movies, what happens to the human body when exposed the to the vacuum of space? You either bleed from the eyes, freeze solid, or basically explode. Well in the first Guardians of the Galaxy, we see something happen to Star-Lord that floats in the face of everything else we’ve seen go down in space. So what really befalls the human body when you’re falling through the void?

In my latest Because Science, I’m going through the experiments we’ve done that tell us what would really happen to you if you were pushed out of an airlock, and why. It turns out that even though you’d be choking to death, meeting your maker in space is pretty subdued. Aside from the pooping your pants while vomiting part.

You wouldn’t explode in space — there is some finite time to act and react to what’s happening to you — but how long could you survive? And more importantly for Guardians of the Galaxy, when Star-Lord saves Gamora outside of Knowhere while floating in nothing, would a human survive long enough to do everything we see him do? Would they make it considering how long both were exposed?

You’ll have to watch my latest episode above to find out!
