Last November, French daredevil and human hang glider Graham Dickinson posted a death-defying video showing his zigging and zagging down a mountain in a wingsuit. In it, Dickinson leaps from a cliff in Chamonix, France as fellow flyer Dario Zanon follows, filming the whole thing from a helmet-mounted GoPro. The duo rocket past cliffs and through forests, getting dangerously close to one another and to their surroundings. The video was, and still is, unbelievable, but with the latest post-production modifications, itâs even more amazing now.
Dickinsonâs film team recently tested a ReelSteady plugin to add more stabilization to the clip. The result is a glossy rendering of the filmâs original, adding an extra sheen that makes it appear nearly computer generated. A Facebook user, reacting to Dickinsonâs Facebook post when the updated video was first released, said: âSo reminiscent of the Stars Wars X-Wing fighter assault on the Death Star depicting no margin for error, do or die, fearless technical wizardry and exhilarating capabilities of the best of man’s mind.â
It’s an apt comparison, and it is truly the best of manâs mind, both in regard to the near reckless courage of Dickinson and Zanon and to the technology that can now capture their art in such gorgeous detail. It really makes you appreciate the grace, poise, and guts these flyers have to have in order to survive. Personally I think Dickinson looks more like a caped Harry Potter flying above England on his broomstick, but that’s just me.
Check out the video above and let us know what it would take to convince you to do such a thing.
