Square Enix Ditches Pre-order Program for DEUS EX: MANKIND DIVIDED

When Square Enix unveiled the Deus Ex: Mankind Divided “Augment Your Pre-order” program (below) a few weeks ago, it got a lot of flack from fans, and prompted a ton of negative feedback. The chief complaint was that the company’s plan to offer fans the opportunity to “help” unlock tiers of prizes — like an Adam Jensen figurine or early access to the game — by pre-ordering, was shady. Well, it looks like Square has been listening, and is now officially canceling the pre-order program.

The company took to the title’s official website today to reveal that while their original intention was to give fans a choice of what they received for pre-ordering rather than having it chosen for them, they admit that the “approach created even more frustration than before, resulting in a resounding amount of negative feedback.”

They stated:

We’ve spent a lot of time reading through all of your comments, working to understand how we can try to make things right for you. After much thought and reflection, we decided to close down the program and make all the incentive content available to anyone who pre-orders Deus Ex: Mankind Divided or purchase a Day 1 edition of the game.

They also revealed that the game’s release date won’t be changed because of pre-order numbers, and that everyone will get their hands on the game at the same time, on February 23, 2016.  As for those who’ve already pre-ordered the game, Square notes that all of the changes to the program will be automatically applied to their purchase.
