SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Trailer Introduces Miles Morales

Even fans who’ve loved any or all of the big screen’s takes on Peter Parker—the somber Tobey Maguire, the sass Andrew Garfield, or the plucky Tom Holland—have been wanting to see another version of Spider-Man get his time to shine. Up until recently, it seemed like Marvel Studios would be forever unwilling to mine the rich character that is Miles Morales, the comics’ post-Parker Spidey, for cinematic gold. Although a live action Miles movie may still be a distant dream, the Phil Lord and Chris Miller-produced Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse does indeed look to do the beloved young hero right, and in the form of some beautiful animation.

This first trailer for the film introduces us to the ever-earnest Miles (voiced by Shameik Moore, whom you might know from the movie Dope or the Netflix series The Get Down) at the beginning of his story as a web-slinger and hometown hero, picking up the tools of the trade from a variation on Peter who seems a bit… weathered. (And if anyone can play weathered, it’s Jurassic World and New Girl‘s Jake Johnson.)

Fans unfamiliar with the character’s story may be delightfully surprised to observe that Miles’ police officer pops (Atlanta‘s Brian Tyree Henry) is a definitively positive and not-dead presence in his life, distinguishing him from not only Peter but other Spider-Man regulars like Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacy… who, by the way, is also on board, via the vocal stylings of Hailee Steinfeld, and fully suited up in her own Spider-gear for some day-saving action! By the end of the trailer, “Spider-Verse” does indeed seem like an apt subtitle for such a packed house.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse also stars Mahershala Ali as Miles’ uncle, Lily Tomlin as Peter’s Aunt May, and Liev Schreiber as a criminal kingpin Miles will invariably have to take down. Do you think this looks like a suitable intro to Miles Morales? Let us know!
