SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Reveal: Logan Marshall-Green Will Play Shocker

It may come as a surprise to some of you out there, but Logan Marshal-Green’s role in Spider-Man: Homecoming is a real Shocker. The Prometheus actor’s exact role has been the subject of speculation for months now, but Nerdist confirmed during an open house event held at Marvel Studios’ Burbank offices on Monday night that he will, in fact, be playing the Spider-Man villain Shocker.

During a VFX presentation by Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito, an audience of assembled journalists saw a variety of work-in-progress sequences from the forthcoming Jon Watts-directed Spider-Man: Homecoming. Among scenes of Michael Keaton’s Vulture flight suit in action and your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man crawling all over the Washington Monument was one of Logan Marshall-Green using a pair of very familiar concussive gauntlets and wearing the iconic checker-patterned sleeves of the Shocker. In this iteration, Shocker is serving as Vulture’s underling, using technology supplied by the Tinkerer (Michael Chernus), the Marvel Universe’s premiere supplier of evil superweapons, to wreak havoc on New York City.

Created by Stan Lee and John Romita, Sr., Shocker made his nefarious debut in 1967’s Amazing Spider-Man #46 as the secret identity of Herman Schultz, a brilliant inventor and engineer who put his talents to use as a career criminal rather than actually contributing to society. While in prison, Schultz developed a pair of gauntlets that could shoot high frequency air blasts that would rapidly open safes and deliver concussive force to all those unfortunate enough to cross their paths. And the one usually caught in said path was none other than Peter Parker’s wall-crawling alter ego. But is this the version of Shocker that we’ll see in the movie? Not necessarily.

According to MCU Exchange, Homecoming‘s Shocker will be none other than Jackson “Montana” Brice, a member of the classic Spider-Man villain crew the Enforcers, who went on to become the Shocker in The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series. In Homecoming, Brice will be reimagined as one of The Vulture’s henchmen, scavenging equipment in the wake of The Battle of New York between the Avengers and the Chitauri. This theory is lent further credence by the fact that The Enforcers made several appearances in 2008 The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series, and they were all given technological upgrades by the Tinkerer.

But what about Bokeem Woodbine, you ask? Wasn’t he supposed to be playing Shocker too? Well, according to some out there, the film will, in fact, feature both the Herman Schultz and Jackson “Montana” Brice version of the character. This is already getting too close to “Clone Saga” territory for my comfort, so I’ll just count my blessings that I’ll finally get to see one of my favorite Spider-Man villains on the big screen in at least one form.

Spider-Man: Homecoming opens on July 6, 2017. Find out what else we learned about Thor: Ragnarok, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther at the Marvel Open House.
