SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Adds Hannibal Buress to the Cast

Earlier this week, James Gunn indicated that Spider-Man: Homecoming is only a few days away from beginning production. Now, comedian Hannibal Buress has been named as one of the final additions to the cast!

Variety broke the story about Buress’ casting in the film, but the report offered no details about whom he would play on the big screen. He could potentially a be younger version of Daily Bugle editor Robbie Robertson, the most significant black character in the Spider-Man mythos… other than the more recently introduced Miles Morales. But Buress is too old to be playing Miles, and Robbie Robertson would be a pretty big departure from Buress’ previous comedic roles in Broad City, Neighbors, and The Nice Guys.

Director Jon Watts has surrounded Tom Holland‘s Peter Parker with a surprisingly diverse cast that includes Zendaya, Tony Revolori, Kenneth Choi, and Donald Glover. This probably means that Watts is either introducing new characters to the cinematic canon or that he’ll be colorblind casting established characters. So far, familiar characters like Mary Jane, Gwen Stacy, Flash Thompson, and Harry Osborn haven’t even been officially confirmed for the film. But they will have to show up at some point, since they are all integral parts of Peter Parker’s life outside of his superhero alter ego. Perhaps some of the already cast actors will be taking on these roles.

Michael Keaton is reportedly the villain of Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Robert Downey, Jr. is slated to reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man alongside Marisa Tomei’s May Parker. The film will be released on July 7, 2017.
