SOUTH PARK Renewed for Three Additional Seasons

Last week we got the good news that @midnight had been renewed on Comedy Central for a third season, and the hype caused one announcement to completely slip through the cracks: South Park got extended for another three seasons, too! Each will be 10 episodes long and will continue to see Matt Stone and Trey Parker writing and directing (and of course doing voices) for every episode. The series is already the longest-running scripted show on a cable network, and its extension to 23 planned seasons will likely keep it atop that list for years to come.

Recent seasons have seen the satire-heavy show take aim at fantasy phenomenon Game of Thrones, car service Uber, freemium gaming, and the rise of Lets Play “celebrity” culture. The relative intense turnaround process of creating the show was on full display in 2011’s 6 Days To Air: The Making of South Park. The behind-the-scenes look at the production of a single episode (“Humancentipad”) is a pretty stark explanation of why the episode orders per season are not as large as they once were. Stone and Parker are determined not to put out content that is not up to their personal standards, and creating 22 animated minutes of a Hot Takeâ„¢ on the week’s hottest news story is a consuming process.

The three extra seasons coming to Comedy Central will air on Hulu as well. South Park Digital Studios and Hulu reached a revised deal to keep the show on the ad-supported streaming platform presumably through 2019 and beyond. The long-running series returns to Comedy Central for its 19th season on September 21st.
