Watch the Weird-as-Heck Trailer for Tessa Thompson’s New Film SORRY TO BOTHER YOU

You wouldn’t think the world of telemarketing would be all that exciting, let alone completely freaking insane, but based on the Red Band trailer for Sorry to Bother You we obviously had no idea what the hell was really going on with the people who pester us during dinner. Especially because their world apparently includes seeing a whole lot of Tessa Thompson like we never have before.

The film, set “in an alternate present-day version of Oakland,” follows telemarketer Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield of Get Out) who “discovers a magical key to professional success, propelling him into a macabre universe.” And what is the big secret to selling strangers stuff they don’t need over the phone? Sounding like the world’s geekiest, least threatening white guy (a.k.a. David Cross). That’s about the only thing that truly makes sense in this bonkers trailer (and we mean that in the best way), because the world of high stakes telemarketing leads Cassius down a very lucrative, very bizarre, very surreal path.

(Warning: This trailer is NSFW.)

We don’t know much about what makes someone really good at cold-calling people and getting them to agree to part with their money, but we do know a lot about trailers that make us want to buy a ticket. And this is a trailer that makes us want to buy a ticket.

Although in fairness, just hearing “starring Tessa Thompson” is enough to make us do that even without seeing her in that “hands” costume.

Sorry to Bother You, written and directed by Boots Riley, also stars Armie Hammer, Terry Crews, Steven Yeun, Omari Hardwick, Jermaine Fowler, and Danny Glover, calls on theaters this summer on July 6.

What other films does this trailer remind you of? We’re calling on you to tell us in the comments below.
