Sony Announces GHOSTBUSTERS Theatrical Re-release and New Blu-ray For 30th Anniversary

Today marks the 30th Anniversary of Ghostbusters hitting theaters; when it came out in 1984 it was one of the biggest summer blockbusters of all time, and has held up as one of the funniest and frankly, most perfectly constructed comedies ever made. To celebrate, Sony has announced that the original Ghostbusters will be making its return to movie theaters, hitting 700 screens on August 29th. The theatrical re-release is the centerpiece of a Ghostbusters‘ anniversary celebration that is going to include special events, collectible merchandise (you’ve seen the Lego, right?) and a new Blu-ray release of the original movie, and, for the first time, Ghostbusters II is arriving on Blu-ray as well. Both Blu-rays will arrive on September 16th.

Both Ghostbusters movies will be available separately, or together as one digipack combo. Both films have been remastered in 4K, and aside from all the older special features from the previous Ghostbusters release, will also include all-new special features just for this release, including deleted scenes from the second movie and new interviews with Dan Aykroyd and director Ivan Reitman. There will be a collector’s edition as well with an “exclusive Slimer figurine” if you’re one who goes for such things (between this release, the upcoming Halloween and Twin Peaks Blu-ray box sets, I am going to be one very broke movie geek by the end of 2014). Sony has also relaunched its Ghostbusters.com website.

It’s clear that Sony is really pushing Ghostbusters again, not just for the anniversary, but also to remind younger generations of how important and awesome the franchise is, so when they finally get the ball rolling on Ghostbusters III (which I’m pretty convinced should never happen, but nothing is gonna stop that train now) it’ll be a sequel to movies they have actually seen, and not just a logo on a t-shirt from Urban Outfitters. Hopefully this also means Millennials will stop giving me blank stares whenever I ask, “Are you the keymaster?

  1. 1) Seriously Nerdist, stop being an ass and include Winston on your cover. There are 4 Ghostbusters not 3! 2) I am not the biggest fan of the combined logo. Just have the original logo on 2 sides of the box and the GB2 logo on the other 3 sides. Problem solved.
