A SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Movie May Be in the Works

Sega’s Sonic the Hedgehog has been one of the most recognizable video game icons since his debut in 1991. Now, Sonic may finally headline his own feature film.

During a new interview with The World Folio, Sega Sammy Holdings CEO Hajime Satomi stated that Sega is “currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.”

This isn’t completely out of the blue. Back in 2014, Sega and Sony revealed plans for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which had a script by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux and a partnership in place between Sony Pictures and Marza Animation Planet to produce the film. However, there hasn’t been much public movement on the project in the last two years.

Nerdist reached out to Sony for confirmation and comment, but had yet to hear back at the time of publication.

During the ‘90s, Sonic rivaled Nintendo’s Mario as one of the most popular video game characters, which led to Sonic the Hedgehog comics, manga, and animated series. But so far, Sonic’s only theatrical appearance has been his small cameo in Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph, which also featured appearances by Sonic’s sidekick Tails and their nemesis, Eggman.

What do you want to see in the potential Sonic the Hedgehog movie? Who should voice the title character and which of Sonic’s supporting cast should make their big screen debuts? Grab the rings and let us know in the comment section below!
