With the comic book pool starting to run thin, studios are looking to the video game world to see what properties they can snatch up and turn into feature films. Recently, weâve seen projects get put into development for Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Halo, Uncharted, Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid. But large scale PG-13 tent-poles arenât the only thing Hollywoodâs out to create, as this news proves.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures has teamed up with Sega to create a new live-action/CGI hybrid of, arguably, the video game companyâs most well-known property, Sonic The Hedgehog. The film will be written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, and produced by 22 Jump Streetâs Neal H. Moritz under the Original Film banner along with Marzaâs Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi. Toby Ascher will also serve as an executive producer. At the moment, there is no director attached to the project.
As for plot, details are vague with Deadline simply stating â[the picture] will focus on Sonicâs rivalry with characters from the video game, including his evil nemesis Dr. Eggman. Sonic uses his stature as the worldâs fastest hedgehog to move at supersonic speed to protect his friends from their enemies.â Basically, itâs the plot youâd expect for a movie about Sonic The Hedgehog. The specifics of the story will mostly likely come out over time.
A Sonic movie was totally going to happen one day, and what makes us happy is that someone from the Jump Street films is involved. Itâs that kind of mindset that could make this movie shine. Truthfully, a meta take on Sonic would actually be pretty damn funny.
The studio hopes to have one movie in theaters per year, though thereâs currently no release date set for the first one.

Jaleel White. No one else matters.
Exactly. The original voice of Sonic Jaleel White was the greatest.
To quote Sonic, and direct it at SEGA – “You’re too slow”
