Someone Made A Knife That Toasts Bread While You Cut It

Yup! Just like in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy movie! YouTuber – and probably one who always knows where his towel is – Colin Furze created this one of a kind bread-toasting knife after taking the suggestion from a fan. Oh, what a time to be alive.

2005’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was met with mixed reviews but it still chock full of fun moments from the book of the same name. Douglas Adams, author of the book series, also co-wrote the script so despite some changes of the source material and outright additions that never appeared in the books, the movie still has that distinct Adams feel.

The movie chose to use Trillian’s (Zooey Deschanel) demonstration of all things futuristic and literally space-age to Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) by showing off a very lightsaber-like (sound effects included) butter knife that toasted your bread as it cuts. (I don’t quite think I’ll get a chance to bring to light something I always felt about that scene and it is this. Why does she wave the damn laser sword in Arthur’s face and giggle!? It’s something a psychopath would do!) While this scene sets up how advanced technology is away from Earth, it also glossed over one of the most quotable moments and fairly important plot points of the books. You could say it’s “almost, but not quite, entirely unlike” a great expositional scene.

Onto the real world though! Furze up and made the damn thing! While not as sleek or laser sword-ish as it’s seen in the movie the knife does a pretty great job at replicating the results! With a build that seems borderline dangerous, using a microwave’s transformer connected to a serrated blade that serves as the heating element.

The results are fairly suprising as it does produce – albeit a bit uneven – decent looking toast. Furze then displays the alternate uses of the tool for toasting a single slice of toast and then simultaneously melting and spreading butter on it. We still have a long way to go for real light sabers, and I imagine further still where they become so humdrum that we relegate them to the kitchen for breakfast utensils but this build is still quite impressive. Furze’s other work has included functional Wolverine claws, Magneto inspired boots and a chunky-yet-functional Ironman suit and his bread-toasting knife surely fits right in with the rest. These creations are an indication of one of two things, either Furze is really going to be a superhero one day or more likely, after the Mad Max-ian look of the Ironman suit and this knife, he’s gearing up for Fury Road. WITNESS ME TOAST BREAD!
